How to Chase Community While Dealing With Grief

While it’s not something we often want to talk about, grief is a part of our lives. The question is, is it possible to still be in community with others while we’re dealing with grief? Rylie Stevenson is sharing with us her top three tips for how to navigate grief. At just sixteen-years-old Rylie learned what losing someone important felt like. After the death of her father, Rylie decided to make it her mission in life to help others work through grief and learn how to still find joy in life even when it can’t be shared with the people we want to share it with.

If you’re in the midst of dealing with grief you need to:

  1. Give yourself grace. It can be really easy to beat ourselves up for all the things we never did or never said or did say and wish we didn’t. The biggest answer to this is grace. It’s so much easier said than done, but it’s the most necessary part of grief.

  2. Feel the way you feel. Most of the time, our knee jerk reaction can be to just shove the feelings away and hope that this isn’t our new reality. Letting yourself feel the hard feelings and the ones that are confusingly not as hard is part of the process.

  3. Process it the best way you know how. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve. There isn’t a timeline or a how-to book. Process it the best way you know how in that moment. If that means sitting in silence, do it. If it means going out and smashing dollar store plates on the driveway, do it. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone.

While it’s obvious there are downsides to grief, there are also beautiful parts to it. One being that if you allow it, it can bring you closer to those around you. Grief can remind you how absolutely short life is and how you only get one go-around.
